Lightwaves2020 compact ASE light sources exhibit excellent performance, including spectral and power stability. In addition, customers can choose between a standard or flattened spectrum output to best meet their application requirements. The ASEs are normally shipped with a standard RS232 or I2C electrical interface, although customized interface designs are also available. Lightwaves2020\’s low-cost, compact ASE sources have passed Telcordia GR1312 tests.

Lightwaves2020\’s MSA compliant gain block is designed for single-channel or banded channel amplification. It is a direct, low-cost drop-in replacement of existing high cost EDFAs.

The EDFA gain block includes a 980 nm pump laser, input monitor and input isolator, output monitor and output isolator, and a reel of optimized erbium-doped fiber. These components are contained within a compact 70 x 90 x 12 mm package.

A user-friendly MSA compatible 20-pin interface is included to enable the device to communicate with control electronics. The MSA EDFA is Telcordia compliant.

Lightwaves2020\\’s liquid crystal based variable optical attenuator array (AVOA) is a voltage-controlled module designed specifically for power management in optical networks. Each device in the module has a dynamic range of up to 40dB attenuation and operats in the C-band, L-band or C+L band.

Eight VOAs packaged in small footprint make it ideal for integration onto circuit boards and for saving space. The module is driven by a 0-5V DC voltage using a easy-to-plug 12 pin electric interface connector.

Liquid Crystal Based Wide-Band Variable Optical Attenuator

Lightwaves2020’s liquid crystal based variable optical attenuator (VOA) is
a voltage-controlled device designed specifically for power management in
optical networks. The device has a dynamic range of up to 40dB attenuation
and wide operating band of wavelength from 1260nm to 1620nm.
Sealed in a compact coaxial package 7.2mm in diameter, the VOA’s small
footprint makes it ideal for integration onto circuit board. In addition, it
offers the benefits of no moving parts, precision attenuation control without
backlash, small driving voltage, low insertion loss and low cost. The
VOA is driven by either a 0 ~ 40V peak to peak 10KHz square wave or by
a 0 ~ 5 V DC voltage using Lightwaves2020’s easy-to plug driver board.
The VOA can be used for pre-emphasis of DWDM laser signals in long
haul systems, power equalization in optical add/drop modules and optical
cross-connects, as well as gain-tilt adjustment in EDFA. As with all
Lightwaves2020’s products, this wide-band VOA conforms to Telcordia
requirements.

Lightwaves2020\\’s polarization controller is based on liquid crystal technology. It consists of three or four liquid crystal retarders with their fast optical axes oriented at 0° or 45°, which have the same functionality as variable waveplates. Theoretically, only three liquid crystals retarders are needed to transform an arbitrary input state of polarization into any desired output polarization state. The fourth one is added for fast searching, if necessary. The control over the state of polarization is achieved by individually changing the voltages applied to each retarder, which controls the retardations.

Sealed in a mini 10-pin DIN package with dimensions of 13.8 x 7.5 x 8.0mm, Lightwaves2020\\’s polarization controller provides an easy-mounting solution for many applications. In addition, the device and the thermal sensor can be integrated in the same package for close-loop control, which stabilizes the thermal performance. The PC is Telcordia compliant.

A standard 6-pin electrical connector (MOLEX 87089-0616) allows for easy electrical connectivity. The ultra-compact EDFA is Telcordia compliant.

The Lightwaves2020’s high-speed polarization controller (PC) is based on novel optical material offering fast response in ms, in contrast with conventional polarization controllers with speed in ms. The dramatic increase in response speed enables the new polarization controller suitable for demanding 40Gbs PMDC application as well as polarization Mux / DeMux. In addition, the new high-speed polarization controller is ideal for fiber sensing in optical security, spectroscopy and polarization
dependent imaging in biomedical applications.
An optional driver-PCB, on which the polarization controller is mounted, is provided. The device is driven by 0-5 VDC voltage to produce 0 – p phase retardation ofpolarization state.
The high-speed polarization controller (PC) has options of three or four cell design. The fourth cell is added for faster searching and controlling.

Lightwaves2020\’s MSA compliant gain block is designed for single-channel or banded channel amplification. It is a direct, low-cost drop-in replacement of existing high cost EDFAs.

The EDFA gain block includes a 980 nm pump laser, input monitor and input isolator, output monitor and output isolator, and a reel of optimized erbium-doped fiber. These components are contained within a compact 70 x 90 x 12 mm package.

A user-friendly MSA compatible 20-pin interface is included to enable the device to communicate with control electronics. The MSA EDFA is Telcordia compliant.
