Lightwaves2020 Introduces a Normal-Off VOA that Enables Channel Blocking and System Protection
MILPITAS, CA, July 8, 2003 – Lightwaves2020, an innovative leader in the design and manufacture of fiber optic components, introduces the world’s first Normal-Off Liquid Crystal (LC)-based Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA), which is the newest addition to its extensive line of manual and intelligent VOAs.
This product fills a critical gap in the marketplace enabling the VOA to play a critical part in system protection. By providing normal off when no driving voltage is applied the channel is blocked in order to protect the system. This differs from typical VOAs where the light signal passes through when in the off state, leaving the receiver vulnerable to overshooting.
Another unique feature of this VOA is that it is integrated with an LC-based waveplate. Since the attenuator and waveplate are both LC based, the VOA is temperature independent, thereby eliminating thermal drift. Attenuation increases monotonically in the normal-off VOA when voltage is applied.
The Normal-Off VOA also requires a driving voltage of only 0-10 VAC, which is half the voltage typically required by VOAs. This further increases the attractiveness of the LC approach by reducing power consumption costs. Just like Lightwaves2020’s other LC VOAs, the Normal-Off LC-based VOA exhibits a low Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) and minimal Wavelength Dependent Attenuation (WDL).
The Normal-Off VOA includes a driver designed by Lightwaves2020, eliminating the need for customers to expend internal time and resources developing their own drivers.
