Abstract: We introduce
here a novel liquid crystal based single cell polarization controller
for converting a linear input polarization state into any polarization
states on the great circle of the S2S3 plane of the Poincare sphere.
The fabricated device has a miniature package measures only Æ3.5x19
mm. The device has a typical performance of extinction ratio ³
20 dB and insertion loss £ 0.8 dB. The total power consumption
is at a mere mW level. The single cell LC polarization controller
has been proven to be an accurate and reliable alternative solution
for many polarization management tasks, such as PMD compensator,
polarization multiplexing, and instrumentation, with dramatically
reduced cost.
