Lightwaves2020 Receives Approval from Two Major Customers for its Compact Low Cost EDFA
MILPITAS, CA, June 12, 2002 - Lightwaves2020, an innovative leader in the design and manufacture of fiber optic components, has received approval for its standard low cost EDFA from two major manufacturers of fiber optic systems. This approval is based on the EDFA's combination of superior performance and low cost.
Sold at $999 in volume, Lightwaves2020's EDFA provides the lowest cost solution available on the market. The low cost EDFA uses an un-cooled 980nm pump laser to reduce the cost and power consumption. It offers economical amplification, making it ideal for a variety of cost-sensitive applications in long haul, metro and access networks.
The compact low cost EDFA is designed to amplify from one to four 100 GHz-spaced channels in the C-band or one to eight 50 GHz-spaced channels in the C-band. When used as a booster amplifier it can boost the output power of transmitters or, as a pre-amplifier, it can amplify weak signals before they enter the optical receiver.
The compact low cost EDFA has many competitive features, including low cost, small size (40x70x12 mm); low power dissipation over a wide operating temperature range; high small signal gain and low noise figure for the pre-amplifier; high saturated output power for the booster amplifier; and tailored optical and electrical performance for different applications.
Customers can buy the compact low cost EDFA either as a gain block or a fully functional amplet with control electronics integrated.
